How GPA Is Calculated (With a Worked Example)
GPA is a credit-weighted average of grade points. The three-step math:
- Convert each final grade to points (A = 4.0, B+ = 3.3, C = 2.0…)
- Multiply points × credit hours = quality points per course
- Divide total quality points by total credit hours
Example: A in a 3-credit course (12.0 pts), B+ in a 4-credit course (13.2 pts), B in a 3-credit course (9.0 pts) → 34.2 ÷ 10 = 3.42 GPA. Notice the 4-credit course moved the needle more — credits are leverage, which is exactly why GPA strategy is about where you spend study hours.
Weighted vs Unweighted GPA
Unweighted GPA caps at 4.0 regardless of course difficulty. Weighted GPA rewards rigor: an A in an AP course counts as 5.0 (or 4.5 for Honors in many districts). Colleges typically look at both — the weighted number signals course rigor, the unweighted number shows raw performance. This calculator reports both, plus your cumulative GPA when prior coursework is entered.
